Job Summary:
The primary function of the business intelligence designer is to provide overall business intelligence design direction that supports the development and implementation of the enterprise data warehouse and associated data marts within the Management Information area of Personal Lines. These initiatives target improved business value through data acquisition and data presentation to the business community via business intelligence tools which support business analytics and decision making functions. These initiatives include highly complex concurrent projects. This position is responsible end to end business intelligence design from data acquisition through data presentation. This position requires direct and active involvement in ETL design, business intelligence application design, and code level development processes. The business intelligence designer will be required, based on the assignment, to write and test code to support prototypes, code reviews, and performance efforts within the MI arena. The business intelligence designer will deliver design documents which can be shared across the business, application development and quality assurance organizations. The individual must be able to effectively communicate with business representatives, in their terminology, using both verbal and written skill sets. This position requires a 'hands on' approach which will utilize both a detailed code level expertise and a broad perspective on application solutions in the MI space in order to provide business intelligence functionality to the business.
Primary Duties:
Provide designs and code, as needed, to meet specific to data warehouse application requirements.
Ensure that designs are consistent with Personal Insurance architecture guidelines through blueprint and design reviews
Assist in the assessment of application stability and performance through code level reviews
Adopt and communicate new concepts, ideas, techniques, and best practices specific to the MI tool portfolio
Perform project level design, data analysis and application performance analysis
Responsible for the design of enterprise data warehouse application utilities including best practices and guidelines for supported technologies
Provide technical expertise in the following areas (dependent on knowledge and expertise):
Primary Skills:
Excellence in verbal, written communications, presentations and technical documentation
Data analysis and interpretation
Business intelligence tools (Cognos, MicroStrategy, SAS)
Data warehouse concepts and design including active data warehousing techniques
ETL tools including Ab Initio ( preferred ), Informatica and Data Stage
RDBMS including TeraData ( preferred), UDB DB2, Oracle, SQL Server with a heavy emphasis on SQL coding expertise
Unix/Linux shell scripting (k-shell)
ETL design
Data modeling
Database design covering both star schema and third normal form implementations
Meta data, including data types, XML, fixed and variable record layouts
Secondary Skills:
Coding Languages: Java, C#, C++, COBOL
WEB Technologies
Development platforms (.NET, J2EE, COM)

Demonstrated coding expertise in SQL, detailed ETL tool coding experience, and significant first hand BI tool development experience. Demonstrates a broad conceptual understanding of the capabilities business intelligence technologies. Specific technical knowledge and experience with ETL tools and ETL design in a multi-terabyte data environment. Fundamental understanding of performance issues in both ETL tools, databases and business intelligence tools. Ability to provide integrated, end to end business intelligence designs. Demonstrated ability to clearly articulate technical designs, issues and resolutions in verbal and written communications.

Demonstrates advanced analytical and diagnostic skills dealing with issues that are often novel and not readily defined, lack known precedent or appear contradictory. Able to develop solutions by applying accepted processes or creating new approaches to leverage technology from abstract information. Experience:
5+ years in business intelligence design focused on enterprise data warehouse solutions
10+ years of hands on data warehouse development
Experience managing the application delivery process.
Minimum of 3 years experience in project management.
Experience working in a matrixed organization.
