Through a structured training program, the underwriting trainee learns about our underwriting philosophy, business unit products and strategies, principles of negotiation, and relationship building. <br/><br/>As knowledge base increases, participants are gradually given more responsibility within a line of business and eventually an apprenticeship territory. Underwriting Trainees begin by handling renewal business under the supervision of an underwriter and move to developing new business as their skills develop.<br/><br/>PRIMARY DUTIES:<br/>Observe and work with underwriters, risk control representatives, and claim representatives to become familiar with the functions of these positions and how they interact and work with one another <br/><br/>Develop critical underwriting skills, through classroom, independent, and on-the-job training, including analysis of exposures, determination of appropriate insurance coverage and conditions, and the assignment of premium amounts <br/><br/>Gather and review information on financial conditions, risk exposures, loss history, and economic trends that may affect the type of insurance coverage provided <br/><br/>Establish, support, and maintain effective relationships with customers, agents and brokers<br/><br/>EDUCATION/COURSE OF STUDY:<br/>The ideal candidate for the development program will desire a position that is both analytical and marketing-oriented. A bachelor-s degree is required for this position.  Preferred majors include Risk Management & Insurance, Finance, Business Administration, Economics or equivalent work experience. Responsible for providing Account Executives with information necessary to make sound underwriting decisions (i.e., marketing, customer service and administrative support affecting brokers/insureds from initial submission through policy issuance and renewals). Provides support within established performance standards and priorities that are responsive to marketing, underwriting, retention and service goals. Assures all related support activities are delivered in a manner consistent with business unit customer service and expense management focus.<br/><br/>PRIMARY DUTIES:<br/>Participates with Account Executives/Underwriters in the renewal and new business activities that support marketing and underwriting decisions that are consistent with business unit growth and retention goals.<br/><br/>Partners with Account Executives/Underwriters to establish support needs for new and renewal policies (i.e., identify/gather relevant account information to quote and/or bind the policy; create exhibits, etc.).<br/><br/>Participates in pre-renewal meetings to define assignments.<br/><br/>Prepares underwriting/pricing exhibits (i.e., exposures, experience rating, profit and loss analysis, expense models, updated account information, etc.).<br/><br/>Manages account documentation (i.e., proposals, agreement letters, reinsurance contracts, collateral agreements, policy change, endorsements, cancellations, etc.).<br/><br/>Ensures accurate and timely servicing and billing of accounts.<br/><br/>Communicates with brokers/agencies, insureds/customers and internal departments.
